Conditions prior to the Sub-project implementation

The New Grounds Primary School, as a result of ageing facilities, was in a dilapidated condition, and as such, teaching and learning was being done under deteriorating conditions. Cupboards, partitions and doors were in need of repair and many of the windows were damaged, making the structure insecure. The toilet facilities were inadequate and in urgent need of repair. The perimeter fence was in a state of disrepair and was a security threat as unauthorized persons could enter the school premises. There were drainage issues around the school buildings that created a health and safety hazard when it rained.

Scope of Works

The New Grounds Primary School Rehabilitation was completed on August 31st, 2020. All of the classrooms as well as the science lab were refurbished and two movable partitions were installed. The school was repainted, all damaged portions of the roof was replaced, 150 damaged windows and wooden louvres were replaced with storm proof aluminium windows. The school kitchen and the Tuckshop were upgraded and the cupboards replaced. A solar hot water heating system was installed. The toilet block was completely overhauled and the sanitary ware replaced. The external works replaced 300 ft of chain link fence and constructed 150 ft of drains. The final cost for this project was XCD $853,452.76.

Outcomes/Impact

  • 257 students (127M, 130F) benefitted from this sub-project.
  • The additional classroom space and enhanced school facilities have positively affected teaching and learning.
  • Students have a healthier environment with an upgraded water fountain and sanitary facilities.
  • Both males and females benefitted from increased privacy and security with separate entrances to bathrooms. At New Grounds, the unusable bathroom for Block B was refurbished and doubled the number of available student bathrooms for both male and females. 
  • The partitions between classes have decreased the noise level and distractions during lessons.
  • The improved security in the new fencing means that the school gained improve control of access to the school, especially in adhering to Covid-19 protocols.
